Old Grape Gød
Trøntønømø Bay
Released December 2016
Trøntønømø Bay is a 2016 cassette from Portland avant-garde hip-hop artist Old Grape God. I caught his live show a few weeks back: Accompanied by a beat maker, he riffs, improvised, beat poet-style, stream-of-consciousness verses. It doesn’t always work, but mostly it does, and there are sometimes rare transcendent moments of compelling magic. This release from Homeskillet has a similar free-form energy, full of fascinating diversions and labyrinthine cul-de-sacs. This tape is highly recommended: Old Grape God makes the sort of music for which the so-called rules don’t apply, teaching all of us, again and again, to experiment deeply in directions we never thought possible.
